Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the common mistakes found in the official letters. The mistakes identified are in terms of determination of the style of letter writing, the correctness of parts of letter writing and the usage of General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling or Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia (PUEBI). The method used is qualitative with descriptive type. The data collection techniques used included observation, documentation, library study. The data obtained in this study were sourced from official letters issued by relevant institutions written in the last reports of Secretary program study students of ASMI Santa MariaYogyakarta conducted from 2016 until 2020. The periode of time was choosen after PUEBI enforced in the end of 2015. There are there types of official letters from different institutions observed namely invitation letter, mission order letters and certification letters. The result of this study concluded there several mistakes dealing with the the determination of the style of letter writing paticulary in adopting the style letter writing correctly. The mistakes included wrong placements of the parts of letter writing so that the styles choosen were not correctly adopted. There are some mistakes found dealing with the writing of the parts of letters. There are still many official letterheads written in incorrectly writing conventions such as the writing of address, telephone number, e-mail and website of the office. Other mistakes included the writing the name of the city before the date of letter. The other mistakes found dealing with the usage of PUEBI were puctuations, words choice, abbreviations, orthography, inappropriate opening and closing sentence constructions.
