Abstract

This research focused on the communication made by the agricultural extensions to farmers, more specifically on the media used to convey information/messages/programs in agriculture. Data were collected from informants through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed using descriptive methods. The results showed that the task of agricultural extension workers was to deliver the program through extension activities. For this reason, it was necessary to plan extension materials, prepare, implement, evaluate, and reporting of extension results. The extension targets were the main actors, business actors, and intermediate targets. Meanwhile, the role of the extension worker was more as a motivator than as a facilitator, mediator, and consultant. The most widely used communication media was WhatsApp (WA) and through farmer group dynamics. Another medium was the use of brochures, posters, and leaflets. Community figures, both formal and informal, also had an important role as a medium for delivering the program, if agricultural extension workers encounter problems. Each medium had strengths and weaknesses. The selection of media was adjusted to the characteristics of the farmers, their needs, and the level of knowledge possessed farmers.
