Abstract

This descriptive research aims to describe the preparedness of the people of Deles, Sidorejo Village, Kemalang District, Klaten Regency, Central Java living in the slopes of Mount Merapi in facing natural disasters. The research which was carried out from March to June 2025 used observation, interview, and documentation as the data collection. The findings show that in facing a natural disaster, namely the Mount Merapi eruption, the community has a preparedness attitude. The life uniting with nature encouraged the emergence of local wisdom "nadyan gari pondhasi aku kudu bali" (even though there is only foundation left, I have to go home) believed by the people of Deles. Besides, the slogan "living comfortably with threats" was developed. It meant people were comfortable because of several developed-conditions including the development of a preparedness system in the community, the existence of adequate infrastructure, and local wisdom integrated with technology. These ways people know and understand disaster risk reduction procedures, recognize threats and know the rescue procedures starting from individuals, families and communities, strong mutual cooperation in the community, and the availability of evacuation transportation. The Deles community –dealing with farming, mining sand and stone, and depending on tourist attractions– was an independent community. Preparedness had naturally been built since pre-disaster, during disaster, and after disaster. Collaboration with various parties is sought for the survival of the community in the future.
