Abstract

Crime is a social phenomenon constantly looming over human life, bringing about suffering. From a legal perspective, crime is viewed as a violation of regulations; however, from an ethical standpoint, it is an act violating moral values and undermining human dignity. Formal law enforcement often merely addresses surface-level symptoms, necessitating a philosophical-ethical approach to dissect the deepest roots of criminal behavior. This article aims to discuss the concepts of ethics and crime, analyze the dialectical relationship between them, and examine the crucial role of ethics as a preventive instrument in averting and addressing various forms of crime within society. It employs a philosophical review approach—involving critical reflection—to dissect the concept of morality through several theoretical models regarding the nature of crime: Manichaeism (crime as an independent substance), Privatio Boni (crime as the absence of good), Theodicy (crime within the divine plan and the formation of negative habitus), and Perspectivism (crime as a construct of subjective judgment). The study reveals that while various philosophical models offer differing explanations regarding the nature of crime, they all underscore the importance of the human moral dimension. Ethics is understood not merely as an evaluative tool but also as a means of character formation serving to prevent the emergence of crime. Crime cannot be completely eradicated solely through stricter legal regulations or criminal sanctions. Ethics plays a central role in healing moral ailments from within the individual. A commitment to ethical living is an existential imperative for upholding human dignity and nurturing harmony in communal life.
