Abstract
Competitiveness of a university depends on its quality. Quality itself means the conformity with standards. As an organization, university needs to be managed professionally with efficiency and effectiveness as performance standards. Universities in Indonesia is regulated by The Law of No 12 the year of 2012, The Government Regulation No. 4 the year of 2014, and The Regulation of The National Education Minister No 49 the year of 2014. According to the regulation, there are four standards that have to be fullfilled by universities i.e. accountability, transparency, non profit, and quality assurance. For the persons in charge of managing the university, they need to have some qualifications: conceptual skills, human skills, and technical skills. Besides, they have to play managerial role: interpersonal role (figurehead, leader, liaison); informational role (monitor, disseminator, spokesperson); decisional role (entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator, negotiator). Good university management can’t be separated from the following management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These functions need to be performed integratedly to achieve determined goals.
